At the Water’s Edge
In just a few short hours, we will all truck our stuff down to the beach to witness the baptizing of 10 individuals, who publicly, want to show how much they love Jesus. This morning we heard the stories. All were full of joy – each one coming from a different place in life.
It made me realize that each of us needs to be refreshed in the Spirit – life just sort of runs amok & unchecked & each day we need to be baptized in the Spirit. There is nothing magical about the "water", but it is what it represents that is everything. Following the Lord in baptism is not a requirement for salvation, but it is a command. For some (like me), we came to faith as a child – never having the earth-shattering story of redemption, but I did not follow in the waters of baptism until my senior year of high school, some 12 years after I came to faith in Christ, because I thought I needed to be perfect or as close to perfect as possible.
Baptism isn’t about being perfect, only Christ was, it is about following Christ’s commandment to be baptized & to show our public confession to Christ. So. . .today. . .when I am beyond exhausted. . .I will join others down at the water’s edge to affirm their commitment to follow the Lord in the waters of baptism. . .and to support them.
